新型コロナウイルスの影響で４月９日から休園が続いている平塚市総合公園内の「ふれあい動物園」を特別にのぞかせてもらい、動物たちの様子を見学させてもらった。 同園では馬や鳥、サル、ウサギなど計37種およそ７６０匹の動物が飼育されている。 訪れた23日は天候に恵まれ、リスザルはおりの中で飛び交い、セキセイインコは声高らかに鳴き、馬は馬場を走り回るなど、元気な姿を見せていた。 休園中に変化のあった動物もいる。 昨年末に大磯町で保護され、今年１月に同園に引き取られたカピバラは、これまでは飼育員が近づこうとするだけで逃げていた。 だが４月頃からは自ら近づき、エサが欲しい時には鼻先で「ツンツン」とつついてくるようになった。 責任者の大越知美さんは「少しずつ人に慣れてきている。 一般公開できるよう世話を続けたい」と意気込む。 再開は７月の予定だが、状況で早まる可能性もある。 大越さんは「来園時に多くの人に楽しんでもらえるよう準備を進めたい」と話していた。
